Our two Reception classes literally 'receive' our pupils into the school and is the first experience they have of learning at North Wootton Academy. These early experiences can have a long impact upon a child's view of school and therefore, this is a very specialist area of the school, led by skilled Early Years' professionals.

Due to the young age, the learning within these classrooms is different to the rest of the school as it must follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework which sets out the standards for learning, development and care of children from 0 to 5 years old. This has slightly different areas of learning to the National Curriculum which directs the learning from Year 1 to Year 6.

In comparing the two, the EYFS framework places greater emphasis on the pastoral development of the children, rather than the academic and therefore places equal importance on areas such as Personal, Social and Emotional Development, as those such as Literacy and Mathematics.

Therefore, each school day is a carefully planned balance of teacher-lead inputs and child-intiated play, which provides our staff the opportunities to develop the foundations needed for future learning and the pupils time and space to apply this learning within their play.

Whilst our approach is detailed in full within the EYFS section of the website, below is an overview of the learning intentions that are carefully built into the provision to ensure that this learning provides an ideal foundation for Year 1 and beyond
